NCJW NY has a long and rich history of speaking out for progressive policy change. We continue this tradition today as the leading Jewish voice for economic and reproductive justice for New Yorkers.
For 40 years, NCJW NY has provided nourishing meals and grocery staples to New Yorkers in need, never turning anyone away. Today, our Hunger Program provides so much more than just food.
Elderly New Yorkers are often dismissed or forgotten. But Council House is a place where our elders are welcomed, valued, and respected. We celebrate elderly New Yorkers and support their caregivers.
NCJW NY is committed to providing a supportive community. Council House is a place of compassion and understanding, a place where one can heal from life’s most difficult losses.
NCJW NY is committed to educational equity, providing support to help level the playing field for low-income students. Our programming helps children develop a love of books and reading, and foster excitement about school.
Council Lifetime Learning
Nearly one in four adults 65 and older is considered socially isolated, a condition associated with a 50% increased risk of dementia and a risk of premature death that rivals smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity. The greatest antidote to loneliness is establishing and maintaining meaningful social connections. Since 1946, Council Lifetime Learning (CLL) has been doing just that.
Last year:
200 seniors
came through our doors monthly.
500 seniors
received resources, referrals, and counseling from our social worker throughout the year.
33 different classes
and discussion groups were offered each week

Aimed at seniors in New York City living on low and fixed incomes, CLL combines learning, social engagement, and the support of an experienced social work team. Housed within Council House, our vibrant community center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, CLL engages and empowers elderly New Yorkers and creates community through arts and cultural programming. Developed and refined in response to the needs and interests of participants, CLL’s curated calendar engages seniors in activities that cultivate the mind, soul, and spirit—a proven recipe for combatting the social isolation that can lead to physical and cognitive decline.
“When I am at Council Lifetime Learning, I feel like I am at home.”
CLL participant
Within this trusted and valued community, our social work team is able to identify emergent needs and provide critical interventions. The resources, referrals, and counseling provided by our social work team helps our seniors continue to thrive at home, living independently in the community for as long as possible.
CLL offers over 30 activities a week, including art and exercise classes, discussion groups, support groups, lectures and concerts – far exceeding what is offered by most of our peer organizations. Aimed at keeping seniors growing and engaged with the wider world, our high-quality offerings are all free or low-cost, with scholarships available for those who cannot afford even our low fees. Cost is never a barrier to participation. We welcome and value seniors of all walks of life and all racial and religious backgrounds.
