As we approach the one-year anniversary of October 7th, we are reflecting on the deep impact this day had on us. We mourn the lives lost—each one leaving a void that can never be filled. For so many Jews, this was a day that profoundly changed everything, altering our sense of security and our view of the world. There are still 101 hostages in Gaza, and our hearts remain with their families, who continue to live in the agony of uncertainty. We say in solidarity: Bring them home now. We also grieve for the suffering and loss of life in Gaza, acknowledging the deep pain felt by so many Palestinians, both in Gaza and around the world. This collective grief knows no borders, and it reminds us of our shared humanity.
For many of us, this anniversary stirs a complex mix of emotions—grief and anger, confusion and frustration. These feelings may conflict and overlap, leaving us with more questions than answers. Here at NCJW NY, we recognize that we don’t have the solutions. But we hold fast to the vision of a peaceful future with freedom, security, and self-determination for both Palestinians and Israelis.
As we reflect on this past year, let us continue to hope, to pray, and to work for a future where peace can prevail, and where no family has to endure such heartache again.
