November 6, 2024 – A moment of gratitude amongst uncertainty
Last night, New York’s Prop 1 PASSED. First and foremost, we want to thank you. Over this last year, you have made calls, sent postcards, volunteered at poll-sites, and more. Abortion protections and protections for other marginalized populations are now going to be enshrined in our state constitution thanks to your hard work. These protections may now be needed more than ever.
We know that reproductive freedom is a Jewish issue. Judaism supports abortion as health care — allowing and sometimes requiring it. We believe everyone should be able to make their own moral decisions about their bodies, health, and family. And, the majority of New York voters agree.
Judaism teaches us a profound truth about the connection between voice and action. In Hebrew, the word for ‘voice’ and the word for ‘vote’ are one and the same: kol. This is not just coincidence — it is a reminder that to vote is to raise our voice, speak up for our values, and fulfill our sacred duty to repair the world
Last night’s presidential election results are distressing for the future of our Jewish progressive values nationwide. This is a sign that our work is more important than ever. The community we have built and continue to build is what will allow us to make change happen. Together, we can work to fix our imperfect world and build a future where women, children, and families don’t just survive, but thrive.
